Sacred Heart College, Geelong, Australia In June 1859, the Archbishop of Melbourne, Dr. Goold, petitioned the Sisters of Mercy in Dublin to establish a community in Geelong. On September 5, 1859 they set sail, and in 1860 opened a school at their convent, Mercer's Hill, Newtown. On April 18th, 2010 the College community proudly celebrated our 150th Anniversary, with an outdoor mass for 5000 people, and a day of festivities. The public Performance Art form called Flashmob is a 21st century phenomenon, and we thought it fitting to create some history of our own by performing a Sacred Heart College Flashmob Dance. The two dance teachers in collaboration with final year Dance students chose current music, and choreographed iconic dance moves of our time. (Look out for Flashdance, The Mosh Pit, Thriller and The Sprinkler.) The entire school community of 1500 students and staff got behind the idea and learned the dance, keeping it secret from family and friends. It was performed twice:- in the morning after the mass, and again in the afternoon during the festivities.
